"I should think you would. Conked on the head yesterday, in a motorcycle accident today. What next? Are you sure someone hasn't put a curse on you lately, McCall?"
"I don't know. Have you?"
"Me? Why would I?"
"You're the only one I've ticked off recently."
D.J. bent down and pulled off his shoes. "No voodoo doll in my pocket. You'll have to look somewhere else."
He sat up with a groan of pain. "I'll just chalk this accident up to an absent guardian angel."
D.J. frowned at his words. Could that be it? Was Josie supposed to be McCall's angel and not hers? The woman seemed kind of flaky. D.J. wouldn't put it past her to attach herself to the wrong person. Although this Raphael guy she kept talking about should know what was going on.
"I'm going to get out of these ripped clothes and take a shower." Chris stood, swaying a bit before righting himself. "Thanks for bringing me home. I'll see you in the morning."
"You'll see me on your couch in the morning. I'm not going anywhere with you in this kind of shape." D.J. frowned at her own words. Now why had she said such a thing? Since when had Christian McCall's health become her concern?
He turned to look at her from the door to the bathroom, his face pale and drained in the harsh overhead light. "Suit yourself. I'm not up to arguing with you anymore tonight. But sleep in the guest room. Two doors down. It's all made up." He turned away and closed the door.
